A psycho-educational assessment is a thorough evaluation that delves into a child's learning profile, encompassing elements of neurodivergence - a term that refers to variations in the human brain regarding sociability, learning, attention, mood, and other mental functions. This assessment typically includes IQ tests and various processing evaluations. It plays a crucial role in pinpointing a child's learning strengths and weaknesses, their distinct learning styles, and is vital in diagnosing conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and other education-related disabilities, as well as identifying giftedness. Exploring neurodiversity helps us adapt teaching techniques and interventions to boost your child's academic progress and overall achievements.
Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a developmental condition characterized by challenges in social interaction, communication, and often includes repetitive behaviors or specific interests. For the most accurate diagnosis, I rely on the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition), which is considered the gold standard in autism diagnosis. While autism can be identified at various ages, utilizing the ADOS-2 often enables us to make a reliable diagnosis as early as 18 to 24 months in many cases.
ADHD, or Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is typically diagnosed around the age of 4-5. It's a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by a consistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that can disrupt daily functioning. ADHD can impact different aspects of a person's life, including their ability to control their emotions, impulses, and sustain focus. If you have any worries or inquiries about ADHD, I'm here to assist.
Giftedness, particularly in children, is characterized by exceptional learning, comprehension, and problem-solving abilities. It's commonly linked with an IQ score of 130 or higher. However, it's important to understand that the criteria for identifying giftedness can vary and often involve more than just high IQ scores.
Need an IQ test? I administer a range of IQ tests including the WISC-V, DAS-2, KABC-2, WJ-IV, and CAS-2 to evaluate cognitive abilities and determine eligibility for gifted programs.
